The most popular ferry route in the Andamans
Port Blair to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) is the ferry route nearly every traveller takes first. Havelock is the hub for scuba diving, Elephant Beach activities, and Radhanagar Beach. Four private operators run this route alongside the government ferry, so you have plenty of choices at different price points.
The distance is about 38 nautical miles. Travel time ranges from 90 minutes on the fastest private ferries to 2.5 hours on the government ferry. Most departures leave from Phoenix Bay Jetty or Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair and arrive at Havelock Jetty (Govind Nagar).
Ferry operators on this route
Makruzz runs the fastest ferries. Their catamarans cover the route in about 90 minutes. Tickets start around Rs 1,100 for standard seating and go up to Rs 3,400 for premium class. They have a good on-time record and air-conditioned seating.
Green Ocean offers a mid-range option. Travel time is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Economy tickets start at Rs 1,100 and go up to Rs 1,850 for higher classes. A solid budget choice if you want air conditioning without the premium price.
Nautika is another private operator with comfortable seating and reliable service. Prices are in a similar range to Makruzz.
ITT Majestic runs smaller vessels. Fares tend to be competitive with Green Ocean.
Government ferry is the cheapest option but takes 2.5 hours, has no air conditioning, and tickets are harder to book in advance. You need to visit the ticket counter in Port Blair, often a day before departure.
Timings and frequency
Private ferries typically run two departures per day in each direction: a morning ferry around 6:30 to 9:00 AM and an afternoon ferry around 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Schedules change seasonally, so always check current timings before planning your day.
During peak season (December to February), ferries fill up fast. Book at least 2 to 3 days ahead, especially for the morning slot which is popular with travellers who want to reach Havelock by lunchtime.
Price summary
Budget seats start at Rs 1,100 per person one way. Premium seats on Makruzz can go up to Rs 3,400. The government ferry is cheaper but less predictable. Most travellers pick a private ferry for the comfort and reliability.
Which ferry should you pick?
If you want the fastest crossing, go with Makruzz. If budget is the priority, Green Ocean Economy or the government ferry are your best bets. If you get seasick easily, pick a catamaran (Makruzz or Nautika) since they are more stable in rough seas.
