What is sea walking?
Sea walking (also called undersea walk or helmet diving) is one of the most popular water activities in the Andaman Islands. You wear a helmet with a transparent visor that continuously pumps air from the surface. This lets you walk on the sea floor at 3 to 4 meters depth while breathing normally. No swimming ability needed, no diving certification required.
Where you can sea walk
North Bay Island (near Port Blair): The most popular spot. You take a boat from Port Blair to North Bay, then walk into the water from the beach. Price: Rs 3,500 to 3,800 per person. Duration: about 20 to 30 minutes underwater.
Elephant Beach / Nemo Beach (Havelock): A good option if you are already on Havelock. Price: Rs 3,500 to 3,800. Duration: about 15 to 20 minutes underwater.
Neil Island: Less crowded than North Bay. Price: Rs 3,500 to 4,500. Duration: about 15 to 25 minutes underwater.
Price summary
Sea walking costs Rs 3,500 to 4,500 per person across all locations. This typically includes the helmet, instructor guidance, and sometimes underwater photos (check with the operator). Boat transfer to the site may be extra depending on where you start from.
Depth and duration
You walk at a depth of 3 to 4 meters. The underwater experience lasts 15 to 30 minutes depending on the location. The total activity time including briefing, boat transfer, and waiting is about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Age limit and health restrictions
Most operators require participants to be at least 7 years old. There is no upper age limit but you should be comfortable in water and able to walk with a helmet (which weighs about 30 kg on land but feels much lighter underwater due to buoyancy).
People with heart conditions, high blood pressure, asthma, or recent ear problems should get medical clearance before sea walking. Pregnant women are usually not allowed to participate.
What to expect
You wear a weighted belt and the sea walk helmet. An instructor walks beside you the entire time. You descend a ladder to the sea floor, then walk around for 15 to 20 minutes looking at coral and fish. The helmet keeps your face completely dry so you can wear glasses or contact lenses.
Sea walk vs scuba diving
Sea walking is easier and requires no training. You stay at 3 to 4 meters and walk on the bottom. Scuba diving gives you more freedom to swim and explore, reaches greater depths, and lasts longer. If you want a simple, safe first underwater experience, sea walking is the better choice. If you want to explore reefs more freely, try a Discover Scuba dive instead.
