What ferries cost, why prices vary, and how to get the best fare for your route.
Ferry prices in the Andaman Islands depend on three things: which operator you choose, which route you are travelling, and which class of seat you pick. A budget economy seat on Green Ocean costs less than half of a premium seat on Makruzz for the same route.
Government ferry: Rs 300 to 600 per person. The cheapest option but slow, basic, and hard to book in advance.
Green Ocean: Economy starts at Rs 1,000 to 1,100. Higher classes go up to Rs 1,850. Good value for money with air conditioning.
Makruzz: Standard seats start at Rs 1,100 and premium can go up to Rs 3,400. Fastest ferries with the best comfort.
Nautika: Similar price range to Makruzz, with comfortable seating and reliable service.
ITT Majestic: Competitive pricing, usually in the Green Ocean to Makruzz range.
All routes are one-way per person. Here are the price ranges across all operators:
Port Blair to Havelock: Rs 1,100 to 3,400. Six departures available on a typical day.
Port Blair to Neil: Rs 1,050 to 3,300.
Havelock to Neil: Rs 900 to 3,200. The shortest inter-island crossing.
Havelock to Port Blair: Rs 1,100 to 3,400.
Neil to Port Blair: Rs 1,050 to 3,300.
Neil to Havelock: Rs 900 to 3,200.
Most private operators offer 2 to 3 classes:
Economy: Air-conditioned seating, standard seats. The most popular choice for budget travellers.
Premium: Wider seats, more legroom, priority boarding. Rs 500 to 1,000 more than Economy.
Royal or Business: Large reclining seats, small snack service, front of vessel. Rs 1,500 to 2,000 more than Economy.
Some operator websites charge a small booking fee (Rs 20 to 50 per ticket). Cancellation fees vary: typically 25 to 50 percent of the fare if cancelled within 24 hours. There is usually no charge for infants under 2, but child tickets (2 to 12 years) are sometimes discounted and sometimes full fare depending on the operator.
Book Green Ocean Economy for the best balance of price and comfort. Avoid the government ferry unless you are on a very tight budget and have time to spare at the ticket counter. Book return tickets together if the operator offers a round-trip discount. Travel in shoulder season (March or September) for lower prices and fewer crowds.
